I Wrote Down Google’s Selection Mechanism on Beer Mats. Here’s What It Said.

In 2019, I was on a conference tour that took me to SEO events across three continents in twenty days. I had decided to use the trip to interview as many search engine engineers as I could get access to, recording conversations for my podcast and collecting insights that nobody else seemed to be writing down. At one of those events, Gary Illyes from Google sat down and explained, in more detail than I had ever heard from anyone at Google, how the system decides which content to select for display.

The mechanism was multiplicative: annotation scores across dimensions do not average but multiply, which means a single weak dimension collapses the composite score regardless of how strong everything else is.

This principle aligns with industry reporting from Search Engine Journal, which documented Gary Illyes explaining that consistent moderate performance across ranking signals can outperform uneven excellence - a concept Brent D. Payne summarized in the room as, “Better to be a straight C student than 3 As and an F.”

I understood immediately that this was important. I am not sure anyone else in the room did.

When the session ended, the group headed to the nearest bar. I went with them, sat in a corner, and started writing while my friends shouted at me to stop being a bore and join them. I needed paper. The barman had a pen but no paper, so I took a pile of beer mats and split each one vertically down the middle to get two writing surfaces from each. I wrote everything I could remember from Gary’s explanation on six beer mats split in two: twelve half-beer-mats covered in my handwriting, spread across a pub table while everyone around me was having a much better evening.

I did not keep the beer mats. I transferred the notes to a document later, but the originals went in the bin. I did not yet understand quite how important this insight would become to my framework, or to the methodology I would spend the next seven years building. Those twelve half-beer-mats are the lost origin artefact of what I now call the Multiplicative Destruction Effect, and I genuinely wish I had kept them.

One near-zero annotation score destroys an otherwise excellent composite

The principle Gary explained was this: when algorithms evaluate content for selection, they tag it across multiple dimensions (entity resolution, temporal scope, verifiability, corroboration, standalone quotability, and many others) and each dimension gets a confidence score between 0 and 1. At the moment of selection, these scores multiply to produce a composite.

The multiplication is what makes this devastating rather than merely interesting. Content scoring 0.9 on three dimensions and 0.1 on a fourth produces a composite of 0.0729. A competitor scoring 0.7 across all four dimensions produces 0.2401. The competitor is selected every time, despite being weaker on three of the four dimensions. One gap, one near-zero score on one dimension, and the multiplication destroys the composite.

I have watched this play out hundreds of times since 2019. Brilliant content, thoroughly researched, beautifully written, that algorithms completely ignore because one annotation dimension scored near zero. The entity was unresolved (the algorithm could not confidently identify who wrote it). The temporal scope was ambiguous (no dates, no temporal markers, the algorithm could not determine currency). The claims were uncorroborated (no independent source confirmed them). Any one of these is enough to collapse the composite because the multiplication does not forgive a single near-zero factor.

Brent D. Payne’s compression: consistent quality beats selective excellence

Brent’s compression of this principle was perfect, and he said it without thinking about it. The straight C student wins. Consistent 0.7 across every dimension produces a higher composite than three 0.9s and one 0.1. The content strategist’s instinct is to invest in expertise, depth, and originality, which are the dimensions that feel most important. They are important. They cannot compensate for one dimension where the score collapses.

I have spent a lot of time thinking about why this insight was so undervalued in 2019 and why it remains undervalued now. The SEO industry talks constantly about content quality, and content quality matters at the annotation phase. But the Multiplicative Destruction Effect operates at the selection phase, which is a different moment in the pipeline, and it does not care how good three dimensions are if the fourth is broken.

Standalone quotable passages give AI systems something they can extract without context (Dimension 22). Temporal markers tell the algorithm when (Dimension 1).

The UCD Framework (Understandability, Credibility, Deliverability) is, at its core, a system for preventing the Multiplicative Destruction Effect. Understandability prevents entity resolution failures, Credibility prevents corroboration gaps, and Deliverability ensures the content survives the full pipeline and reaches selection with a consistent annotation profile rather than one brilliant in some dimensions and absent in others.

When I audit a brand’s content now, the first thing I look for is the weakest annotation dimension, not the strongest. Raising a score from 0.1 to 0.5 on one dimension improves the composite more than raising a score from 0.8 to 0.95 on another. The bottleneck dimension is always the highest-value optimization target, and most brands have never identified theirs because they have been optimizing for the dimensions they already score well on.

I wrote it all down on beer mats while my friends told me to stop working, and the methodology I have spent seven years building exists because I recognized the significance of what I was hearing and refused to wait until morning to record it. The brands running The Kalicube Process are finding their bottleneck dimensions before the multiplication finds them, and for most of them, the gap between what they assumed algorithms valued and what the multiplication actually rewards is the most expensive blind spot in their content strategy.
