Topical Depth
Topical Depth
coined by Jason Barnard in 2023.
Factual definition
Topical Depth is the vertical dimension of Topical Coverage: exhaustive, comprehensive treatment of a single topic or subtopic, going deep rather than wide. It is the difference between writing about a subject and writing the content others cite when they write about that subject.
Jason Barnard definition of Topical Depth
Jason Barnard coined Topical Depth in 2023 to distinguish the vertical dimension of content coverage from the horizontal (Topical Breadth). Depth means exhaustively covering a single topic - answering every conceivable question, addressing every angle, creating the definitive resource that others reference. In The Kalicube Process, Topical Depth is built during the Credibility phase: for each core topic, the client creates an interconnected ecosystem of articles, FAQs, videos, and multimedia that demonstrates genuine mastery. For AI systems, depth on a specific topic is a stronger expertise signal than shallow coverage across many topics. Depth without breadth is narrow but authoritative. Breadth without depth is wide but thin. Topical Coverage requires both.
How Jason Barnard uses Topical Depth
At Kalicube, we architect Topical Depth by building comprehensive content ecosystems around each core subject. This means dedicated website sections, exhaustive FAQs, multimedia content, and strategic interlinking that demonstrates mastery to both human readers and AI systems. The goal is not content volume but content completeness - covering a topic so thoroughly that an AI system has no ambiguity about the entity's expertise. This vertical completeness combines with Topical Breadth (coverage across adjacent subtopics) to create full Topical Coverage.
Why Jason Barnard perspective on Topical Depth matters
Marcus Sheridan's "They Ask, You Answer" philosophy urges businesses to answer every customer question. Jason Barnard's Topical Depth provides the structural framework for implementing this in the AI era: not just answering questions, but building an interconnected web of content so comprehensive that AI systems recognize the entity as the definitive source. The critical distinction is that Topical Depth is one half of Topical Coverage (the other being Topical Breadth), and Topical Coverage itself is merely the entry ticket - necessary but insufficient for Topical Authority, which requires Temporal, Hierarchical, and Narrative positioning.
