Jason Barnard created Understandability, Credibility, Deliverability in 2019 during a talk in Melbourne, Australia, originally framing it as the Three Pillars of SEO. The insight was deceptively simple: instead of trying to trick Google, have empathy for what Google needs. Google needs to understand your offer, evaluate its credibility, and determine whether it can deliver your content as the best solution. The framework was first published in a 2020 article and video interview on Search Engine Journal - the earliest public proof of the concept. At that stage, it was purely a Google/SEO framework. But the structural logic proved universal: any algorithm - search engine, Knowledge Graph, or Large Language Model - must understand before it can trust, and trust before it can recommend. This universality is what transformed a practical SEO framework into the structural backbone of The Kalicube Process. The framework now maps to the DSCRI-AGDC pipeline (U = Bot Phase Stages 1-4, C = Algorithm Phase Stages 5-7, D = Person Phase Stages 8-9), to the customer funnel (U = BOFU, C = MOFU, D = TOFU), to the Revenue Taxes (U = Doubt Tax, C = Ghost Tax, D = Invisibility Tax), to the Zero-Risk Year (U = Phase 1 Fix, C = Phase 2 Lock-In, D = Phase 3 Expand), and to the three layers of Cascading Confidence (Entity × Content × Presentation). The build order is always U→C→D (foundation first) while the display order is D→C→U (customer journey). Note: Jason initially considered "Suitability" for the third pillar before settling on "Deliverability" - the shift reflected the insight that the pillar is not just about content quality but about the algorithm actively delivering your brand to users.

The UCD Framework has a dual nature that emerged through its evolution. In its original 2019-2020 formulation, it described what brands must DO (communicate identity, convince of credibility, ensure deliverability). In its current formulation, it also describes what algorithms EVALUATE (understand the entity, assess trustworthiness, select for delivery). This dual nature - prescriptive for brands, descriptive of algorithms - is what makes UCD structurally complete. It is both the treatment plan and the diagnostic framework. The three dimensions are also multiplicatively related through Cascading Confidence: Entity Confidence (U) × Content Confidence (C) × Presentation Confidence (D). Weakness in any dimension undermines the product, not just the sum.
