Understandability (U) is the first layer of the UCD framework within The Kalicube Framework. It measures whether the AI understands who the entity is, with what level of confidence, and at what level of detail. Understandability is the foundation: the AI has to know the entity exists and have a confident, detailed entity model before Credibility (recommendation confidence) or Deliverability (topical reach) can attach to it. In the brand build direction, Understandability is built first. In the customer journey direction, Understandability is the Decision stage at the bottom of the funnel: the entity is known precisely enough to deliver the conversion event.

Understandability (U) is the foundational layer of the UCD framework, naming the AI's entity model for the brand. It answers three questions: is the entity understood, with what confidence, and with what depth of detail. U is binary at the macro level (the entity is either understood or not understood) and graduated at the micro level (the confidence and detail of the entity model accumulate over time as the brand consolidates its signals). U is where Identity Bedrock, the Entity Home, the Entity Consolidation Model, and the Identity-Relevance Loop operate. Without U, Credibility cannot attach (the AI cannot trust an entity it does not understand) and Deliverability cannot activate (the AI cannot surface an entity in topical queries if it cannot identify the entity at all). In the build direction U is first. In the customer journey direction U is the Decision stage at the bottom of the funnel: it is what the buyer has reached when they ask for the brand by name and the AI delivers the brand precisely.
How Jason Barnard uses Understandability
At Kalicube, Understandability is the mandatory first phase for every client engagement, typically lasting one to three months for personal brands and up to six months for corporate brands. Our "Done-With-You" service starts with a compulsory one-month actioned digital footprint audit to identify and correct all inconsistencies. We then systematically build out the brand’s Entity Home (their primary website) with clear, fact-based content and structured data. The primary KPI for this phase is securing a Google Knowledge Graph Machine ID (KGMID) and a basic Knowledge Panel. By ensuring algorithms have an unambiguous understanding of the client from the start, we lay a stable foundation for all subsequent Credibility and Deliverability work, accelerating their journey toward controlling their brand narrative and driving business results.
