Josie Barnard

Dr. Josie Barnard SFHEA is a writer and academic whose research centres on how writing and publishing is impacted by the ‘digital turn’.  Her new book, ‘The Multimodal Writer: Creative Writing Across Genres and Media’ (2019), is out now.  The award-winning author of five other books, including ‘The Book of Friendship’ (2011) and ‘Poker Face’ (1996), she also works in radio. Most recently, she presented BBC Radio 4’s ‘Digital Future: the New Underclass’ (2019). She is also producer of prime time BBC Radio 4 programmes such as ‘M1 Magic’ (2009).  Her print features, columns and articles have appeared in newspapers and magazines such as the Guardian, the Independent, Country Living and the Times Literary Supplement.  Her various academic articles and chapters include ‘Testing Possibilities’ for New Writing: The International Journal for the Practice and Theory of Creative Writing (2017) and ‘Twitter and Creative Writing’ for Nova Science (2019). Josie has talked about her work at festivals and events such as the Cheltenham, Clerkenwell and Dartington Literary Festivals and the South Bank Centre’s Women of the World (WOW) Festival.  She has taught Creative Writing for many years including at Goldsmiths and the Faber Academy and she is a member of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)’s Digital Skills and Inclusion Research Working Group.
