The first Boowa & Kwala story, “Around the World in 12 Songs with Boowa & Kwala”, was released as an audiobook narrated by Sir Tony Robinson. It also featured an interactive series of online Cartoons, Stories, Songs, and Games.

In 2003, Veronique and Jason expanded Boowa and Kwala universe with a full cast of family members (Dawa, Mawa, Siwa, Daddy Koala, Mummy Koala, Grandpa Koala, and Grandma Koala). A TV series, co-produced with ITV International, followed and aired in 25 countries, including Playhouse Disney. The website reached a staggering 60 million visits annually at its peak.

Jason’s creative leadership as CEO UpToTen Ltd coupled with his sharp business acumen, and ability to innovate led to partnerships with leading global brands such as Samsung, Groupe Lagardere, Orange, ITV International, Radio Canada and Disney, further propelling Boowa & Kwala into the global media landscape.

Boowa & Kwala debuted on their own children’s website in 1998, powered by Macromedia Flash. The site featured a variety of interactive experiences—cartoons, games, and songs designed to promote empathy, politeness, and problem-solving for children under six. By 2007, the website ranked among the top 10,000 in the world with 5 million monthly visits—amassing a billion page views a year at its peak.

Characters and voices

Jason Barnard voiced Boowa, while Véronique Barnard gave life to Kwala. Boowa, the protective older brother, gently guides Kwala, who’s endlessly curious but often bewildered by the world. Together, they teach children empathy and life skills through music and storytelling.

The Boowa & Kwala universe includes nine characters who appear across the web series, TV show, and music albums, all produced by UpToTen Ltd: Boowa, Kwala, Dawa, Mawa, Siwa, Mummy Koala, Daddy Koala, Grandpa Koala, and Grandma Koala.
